Abstract: Because archives preserve such rich records of the past, they are essential to historical and social research. Yet in practice, collecting archival materials—especially for scholars based at U.S. institutions—often involves challenges shaped by both methodological constraints and shifting access policies. In this talk, Haiyi will reflect on his research journey over the past several months across fourteen archival centers in coastal China. He will introduce several types of Republican-era legal documents and share practical strategies for navigating common obstacles and unpredictabilities in archival work. This talk will be most useful for researchers whose projects rely heavily on archival access. The talk will be delivered in Chinese.
