Lecture – Russian Empire’s Asian Borderland: A Comparison with the Qing

Presenter: Rhonda Ran Huo, PhD student in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures

Time: February 14, 2025, 4:30-6:30 pm

Place: Gregory Hall 415

Introduction:

In this lecture, Rhonda Ran Huo introduced the Russian Empire’s governance of its Asian Borderland, including Kazan, Kalmyk, Kazakh, and Siberia (a definition of Asia before 1725). She analyzed how Russia ruled through differences and compared this approach to the Qing Empire’s governance of Mongolia, Tibet, and Xinjiang. Through this comparison, she highlighted the importance of examining Qing-Russian relationships when studying the Qing northern frontier and argues that Russia, rather than Western European empires, provided a more relevant comparative framework for understanding the Qing Empire.
